Sekilas Tentang Lembaga Demografi FEB UI

Lembaga Demografi Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Indonesia (LD FEB UI -previously known as LD or LD FE UI) was founded in 1 August 1964 with a pioneering mission in the use of demographic analyses in economic and development planning in Indonesia. The founders (Widjojo Nitisastro, N. Iskandar, Kartomo Wirosoehardjo, and Kartono Gunawan) have put important vision to incorporate the demography or population aspect into development model, especially in the developing country. Important thoughts in demography should be integrated into economic development policies and the long-term development plans.

Since its beginning, LD FEB UI has been the leading institute that addresses the effect of number, composition and population growth on national development in Indonesia. LD FEB UI adopted the idea of “Demographic-based Development” that put emphasis on the importance of people in the development.

LD FEB UI has contributed to the development through scientific thinking and research. Since the era of Five-Years Development Plan I (Rencana Pembangunan Lima Tahun / Repelita) in 1969-1974, LD FEB UI has fully supported the government in the planning of Long-Term Development Plan (Rencana Pembangunan Jangka Panjang / RPJP) and the Broad Outlines of State Policies (Garis-garis Besar Haluan Negara / GBHN). Important aspects that were highlighted during that era were fertility, mortality, population control through the family planning, migration, transmigration, employment, health, education, and population policies.

As the country experiences rapid changes in age structure and economic, LD expands its research topics to capture the current development, e.g. demographic dividend, intergenerational economy, social protection, health economics, and applied demography for business. Currently, LD FEB UI has established important network not only with the government and other research institute/agency but also the private sectors.
